What is Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction (TMJ)?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the joint which connects the jawbone to the skull. Every individual has two of these temporomandibular joints on each side of the face. This is the joint that enables us to chew and speak properly. However, sometimes this joint becomes inflamed and locked causing a sensation of pain and tightness in the surrounding area.
Symptoms of TMJ
Some of the symptoms of TMJ are, but not limited to, the following:
• Facial pain, specifically in the jaw area
• Difficulty chewing
• Feeling of the joint locking
• Earache
While there is no one single cause for TMJ, it is believed that the following individuals are at the highest risk factors for potentially developing a TMJ-related disorder:
• Those who grind their teeth, long-term
• Those who have already been diagnosed with a type of arthritis
• Those who have previously suffered an injury to the jaw
• Those who have been diagnosed with a connective tissue disorder in the jaw
Temporomandibular joint issues are very common, and in the majority of diagnosed cases do not require any surgery. Generally, treatment for TMJ-related issues include physical therapy, stress management, or protective gear such as a mouthguard. However, for certain serious cases, surgery may be a treatment option recommended by a doctor or specialist.
If you believe you have a TMJ-related disorder or problem, it is important you consult with your physician or specialist.
