Summer around the corner? Stay hydrated!
With summer just around the corner and temperatures rising, our bodies seem to be more in tune with water intake and making sure we stay hydrated. Remaining hydrated is a crucial aspect to survival not only during the summer, but all around the year. Fluids assist in carrying necessary nutrients throughout the body, aid in eliminating bacteria from certain areas of the body, and help promote excretion.
However, the issue of dehydration is prevalent in the elderly, who often are unable to grasp the concept of thirst as acutely as they were able to in their younger age. And staying hydrated is particularly important for those who particular medications, such as diuretics.
Symptoms of dehydration are, but not limited to, the following:
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Confusion
• Dark-colored urine
• Diarrhea
• Headaches
• Nausea
• Low blood pressure
Because our bodies are made up of approximately 75% water, making sure we stay hydrated is vital. The recommended amount of fluid necessary to prevent dehydration varies, but is between 2 and 4 liters per day for adult males and females. Maintaining adequate hydration is key to promote the body’s circulatory and immune responses.
In order to prevent dehydration, it is important that you drink an adequate amount of water a day, and stay away from foods & beverages high in sugar or sodium. Additionally, consuming foods with a high-water-content can combat dehydration. Some examples of such foods are cucumbers, lettuce, celery, watermelon, strawberries, and cauliflower, among others.
If you or a loved one is experiencing severe symptoms associated with dehydration, it is crucial that you see a medical professional immediately.
