Trouble sleeping? Try some yoga.
Yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual discipline, originating in ancient India, with the goal of the attainment of a state of perfect spiritual insight and tranquility. The word is connected to practices in meditation throughout Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. The word for ‘yoga’ was introduced by Patanjali in the 2nd century BC as a term for a system of abstract meditation.
Some of the health benefits of yoga are, but not limited to, the following:
• Increased strength
• Significant flexibility
• Improved circulatory health
• Improved respiration
• Better athletic performance
• Boosted metabolism
Due to the fact that yoga involves exercises and stretches that involve balance and focus, yoga is also a useful tool to help with problems sleeping. Since one is focused on their breathing and the self during a yoga exercise, the body is able to become less tense and decreases the concentration on racing or negative thoughts.
According to Harvard Medical School, some useful yoga poses to combat insomnia include the following:
1. Wide-knee Child’s Pose (Balasana)
2. Standing Forward Bend (Uttanasana)
3. Standing Half Forward Bend (Ardha Uttanasana)
4. Reclining Bound Angle (Supta Baddha Konasana)
5. Legs Up The Wall Pose (Viparita Karani)
6. Corpse Pose (Savasana)
