Why maintaining good posture is so important
Posture, as defined by the American Chiropractic Association, is “the position in which we hold our bodies while standing, sitting, or lying down.” In today’s demanding world, good posture is unfortunately not a top priority. However, good posture is a crucial component in our everyday health. If it were not for the muscles and bones that make up our posture, it would be impossible to stand or even walk.
What makes good posture significant?
Maintaining proper posture ensures that we have the ability to sit, stand, and lay down in the correct and comfortable manner. It is easy to leave our posture to the wayside as we endure grueling work and social schedules.
However, without good posture, individuals have the susceptibility to develop some of the following conditions or ailments:
• Decreased circulation
• Increased risk of arthritis
• Low energy levels
• Migraines
• Increased back and/or shoulder pain
Thankfully, there are ways to improve poor posture. Some methods include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Yoga
• Simply being mindful of your posture
• Not sitting for prolonged periods of time while awake
• Exercise
• In certain cases, physical therapy
